I had been waiting for this book since page 50 of The Shadow of the Wind I just knew Zafon was my kinda author. The Angel's Game did not disappoint. I could have done with a less supernatural final fifth of the tale, but the balance of gothic mystery, unrequited love, and the obsession with creation and consumption of books. I loved that this was no ordinary prequel. The major characters were nowhere in The Shadow of the Wind (save one who is barely a whisper), but many places and supporting characters are there. That said, The Angel's Game provided significant background and context to the first, to that point that I immediately reread it and found myself relating to/ sympathising with characters in new ways. Now I just have to be patient for the final 2 books of the series.
